The complexity of the conventional golf swing vs. The simplicity of the Natural Golf swing.
When I began my monthly column two months ago I began with the statement "golfers are not improving" and followed that by saying that "the American golfer's handicap has not gone down in twenty five years." It's true and it's certainly not because of the quality of the equipment-- it's more because of the way the game is taught!
This month I'd like to add that the problem also concerns the actual motion we're asked to make –it is in fact complicated until it becomes a habit. Even then the motion we make to get "solid contact" with the ball seems elusive. How many times have we heard Tiger Woods himself comment that his hips spun too fast and his arms got stuck behind him and then he blocked it straight right, and then the next time it happens he flipped his hands over too soon and the ball went low left with a hook. Sound all too familiar?
You know the word paradigm or "belief system"? We all play golf with a paradigm of how to swing the club. Chuck Hogan says that "your paradigm has everything to do with your proficiency and enjoyment of golf". You follow the tradition, the belief system, the paradigm of golf and golf instruction...and you do not get better, your handicap is not going down. Why? Maybe it's just not how you're taught but also what you're taught.
Are you an open minded person? If I told you about a way of playing golf that will make you a better player with far less practice and “work”, would you be interested? There is an alternative-- it is called Natural Golf. It is easier to teach and to learn, especially because of the manner in which the instruction is communicated. It works, period! Because Natural Golf's paradigm is different, it will get you playing better golf. The fact is that hundreds of thousands of golfers play the Natural Golf way. The Natural Golf swing works with your body, not against it. Natural Golf is not going to ask you to spin those hips, and it's not going to ask you to flip over the club head through impact. There is another bonus to using the Natural Golf swing method–it is a proven fact that it is far better for your back, and golfers with bad backs who have limited their play because of the pain can once again play virtually pain free.
Recently I spoke with a young aspiring Hooters Tour player. He asked me to explain what Natural Golf was, and of course I told him and demonstrated it for him. In one short half hour period he was quite simply amazed at his ball striking, the simplicity of the motion, and the quality of his shots. He left me saying that he'd have to think about this some more and do some research. My feeling is that it won't be too long before he calls me to get together. You know, Natural Golf is quite simply the easiest most effective way to consistently strike a ball to a target with distance and accuracy.
